The 29 Large

The following breakdown includes everything we think we’ll need to spend AN ENTIRE YEAR training and racing with other privateer racers. We’ve tried to think through food and gas, some buffer money for mishaps, and the basics to keep Penny safe while she’s racing.

The total: $28,990
GRR Team Support Vehicle (Martin Van Buren) – $6000

Breakdown: $5000 van, $1000 tax, registration, insurance

The team will be looking for a used Ford Econoline 1-ton or similar. The idea is to get something previously-loved but reliable with fewer than 200k miles. Basic Craigslist research shows that a van like the Ford can be found as a former fleet vehicle with reasonable miles and regular maintenance for this approximate price. It’ll be a clunker, but it’ll get the job done.

Crashy Day Fund – $5000

Breakdown: Hopefully not

Crashes happen. Penny will be running cheap(er) plastics, frame sliders, and an aftermarket tank, but she’s gonna need to be repaired at some point. This cushion will make sure that the project doesn’t end if she gets tired and lays down. (Why did the motorcycle take a nap? Because it was two-tired!)

Aftermarket Bodywork – $1750

Breakdown: $550 Nose and Fairings, $160 Tail, $160 Fender, $40 Tank Grips, $600 Tank, $240 TRex Frame and Axle Sliders

We’ll need to take the tank and plastics off the bike and replace them with blanks to dress Penny based on sponsorship and team voting (and to protect her gorgeous Italian paint). GRR will design three livery options for team members to vote on.

Trackside Kit – $1550

Breakdown: $350 Tire Warmers, $300 pit stands, $200 ramps, $200 generator (or solar panels?), $100 canopy, $100 pit flooring, $50 extension cords, $50 fuel jugs, $200 mobile toolbox

Tires – $1100

Breakdown: Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa sets (3x$375)

The Superstock class requires DOT-approved tires (as opposed to racing slicks), so we’ll run the stickier version of the tires the bike was designed with. Fortunately, DOT tires last a little longer than slicks, so we should be set with three pairs over the course of the year (fingers crossed).

Bonus Tools – $500

We’ve got a pretty stout tool collection already, but this buffer is for those specialized pieces of hardware you never knew you needed.

Team Livery – $200-$3000

Breakdown: Van Wrap $2000, Bike Wrap $500, Helmet Paint $500

This cost will vary depending on the number of supporters and the size of contributions. If we’re wildly successful, we’ll go with custom vinyl wraps for the bike and van with custom paint for Charlie’s helmet. If we’re less so, we’ll put stickers on all the things.

Weekends (from 10/16 to 10/17) – $10,090
